President J. Ramos Horta of Timor-Leste spoke at the ASEAN-GCC Summit in Riyadh, emphasizing Timor-Leste aspiration to join ASEAN. He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome by Saudi Arabia. He outlined key areas for Timor-Leste’s engagement:
Political and Security Cooperation: Timor-Leste aims to gain insights into regional politics.
Economic Cooperation: Seek increased trade and investment opportunities with GCC and ASEAN members.
Agriculture and Food Security: Public investment in these areas is a priority.
Energy: Developing the Greater Sunrise Gas field and Tasi-Mane project are top goals.
Tourism: Strengthening the tourism sector through collaboration with GCC and ASEAN.
Socio-Cultural Cooperation: Enhancing cultural ties and people-to-people contacts.
Connectivity: Air Service Agreements with select ASEAN members and GCC nations aim to bring nations closer.
President Ramos Horta also expressed concern over the Myanmar issue and Gaza situation, aligning with ASEAN’s and Indonesia’s positions, respectively. The speech concluded with emphasizing the importance of international cooperation within the ASEAN-GCC framework.
